School districts have adopted a variety of harsh, "zero tolerance" school discipline policies directed at minor misconduct in addition to more serious offenses.

• In Tucson, Arizona, dress code violations and the use of profanity are punishable by up to a 10-day suspension, and fighting or vandalism can result in suspension of up to 180 days, expulsion, and referral to law enforcement.

• In St. Louis, Missouri, tardiness can result in a 10-day suspension, "disruption" or "disrespect" can lead to a 10-day suspension and placement in an alternative school, and the potential consequences for "physical displays of affection" and dress code violations include expulsion.
