This session will present on the federal mandates and discuss enforcement strategies in the public benefits context, by examining four distinct strategies aimed at achieving state and local agency compliance with language access mandates including 1)legislative advocacy, 2)litigation, 3)civil rights complaints, and 4)administrative advocacy. Language Access in the Courts: Advocacy and Collaboration

The ABA Language Access Standards were adopted in February 2012 and provide an opportunity for legal aid attorneys and public defenders to advocate and collaborate with their courts so that language access services are provided for LEP litigants/clients. This session includes an overview of legal requirements and a brief description of advocacy at the national and local levels.
