Cuomo Signs Order Prohibiting ICE Arrests in State Buildings Without Warrants

"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- After U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials detained a man inside a Staten Island courthouse Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo Wednesday sent a cease and desist letter to ICE officials demanding they stop their enforcement actions.

In light of the Staten Island incident and the increased raids earlier this month, Cuomo also signed an executive order requiring ICE agents to have a judicial warrant to enter state buildings.

"ICE is violating the law and endangering public safety in all of those instances," he said.

Immigration activists, including Favio R. Caminatti from El Centro in Port Richmond, met with Cuomo in Manhattan to discuss the immigration busts.

Caminatti said he asked the governor about the immigrant arrested in state Supreme Court, St. George, and he responded with the executive order.

"Great step forward," Caminatti later tweeted.

"The Legal Aid Society and ALAA applaud Governor Cuomo's cease and desist letter to I.C.E, and the modification of his executive order ... to prohibit ICE arrests in courthouses without a judicial warrant," the Legal Aid Society said in a release..."
