Supreme Court Doesn't Act on DACA Appeal

"THE SUPREME COURT ON Monday took no action on President Donald Trump's appeal of a lower court ruling blocking him from deporting immigrants who are without U.S. citizenship because their parents illegally brought them to the country as children.

But the court has put the case back on its conference schedule for Feb. 23.

The inaction leaves in place – for now – a lower-court ruling preventing the president from repealing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era program allowing the children and young adults to stay in the country under certain conditions.

"This doesn't tell us anything one way or the other," says Lorella Praeli, director of immigration policies and campaigns for the American Civil Liberties Union. The case, she says, "could still be heard this term, but ultimately, it's hard to predict what [the court] will do."

In January, a federal judge in San Francisco issued an injunction against Trump's plans to shut down the program while a series of lawsuits against the White House proceed..."
