Domestic Violence Victims Can File Protective Orders at Women's Center

"Now people in Onslow County who find themselves in a domestic violent relationship have another venue in which to file a protective order.

The E-Court Civil Domestic Violence System has been online since Jan. 29, at the Onslow Women’s Center located at 226 New Bridge St. in Jacksonville. This is the second location where people can go to submit a complaint with the assistance from a trained advocate where their information is sent immediately to the Clerk of Court’s office that processes the documents and sends them electronically to a district court judge. The E.W. Summersill District Courthouse on Old Bridge Street near the OWC continues to offer the same service but people entering the building must abide by the rules of the facility which restrict cell phones and children under the age of 6 in the courtrooms and hallways except during the hours of 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m. when courts are not in session.

Onslow Women’s Center Court Advocate Millie Belfort said the center has already assisted one person at their office as word begins to spread throughout the community.

“By coming to the center, people seeking assistance have privacy while entering their information into the system. They’re permitted to bring their children and cell phones into the office,” Belfort said..."
