"Counties across New York should expect higher bills for lawyers to represent the indigent as new state standards take effect that could dramatically increase the number of criminal defendants that qualify for free legal aid.
The eligibility standard for a single person with no dependents will rise from $14,850 to $29,700. Anyone under that income threshold qualifies, with the standard rising for each additional member of the household.
Spousal and parental resources, ownership of a home or vehicle and ability to post bail are not factored into the equation. Qualifying for public assistance programs such as Medicaid, SSI or food stamps or being in jail automatically qualifies applicants."
