'Queen of Pro Bono' Esther Lardent Dies at 68

Monday, April 04, 2016

"Esther Lardent, known as the “Queen of Pro Bono,” died Monday morning. She was 68.

Lardent founded the Pro Bono Institute in 1996 and quickly became one of the nation’s most high-profile and effective advocates for free legal assistance for the poor and disadvantaged. She stepped down as president of the Institute in July due to health issues, according a spokesman for the institute.
The concept behind the Washington-based Pro Bono Institute was fresh when Lardent unveiled it 20 years ago: convince law firms that by doing pro bono work, they could improve their attorney-recruiting efforts while simultaneously boosting their public images. She later expanded those efforts in the corporate legal department realm."
