National Groups Say Prosecution of Conn. Domestic Violence Victim Highlights Flaws in State Law (CT)

"‘These women are trying to do what they’re supposed to do: They get away. But these guys don’t give up. What are [the women] supposed to do? What are their options?’

Advocates from across the country are rallying behind a Bridgeport mother and domestic violence victim who is on trial for killing the man who allegedly abused her during their relationship.

The advocates’ message has been clear: Cherelle Baldwin should not be charged with murder for the death of her ex-boyfriend Jeffrey Brown. Baldwin was arrested after running her car into Brown, pinning him against a wall. “Cherelle Baldwin’s case is not really unusual, nor is it new,” states a letter signed by more than three-dozen organizations supporting Baldwin’s release. Many of the organizations are based out of Chicago.

The groups are upset that the 23-year-old woman is being retried after the first murder trial resulted in a mistrial and the state decided to prosecute her again. But Baldwin’s supporters have been careful to not push prosecutors too hard, at the advice of Miles Gerety, Baldwin’s attorney."
