The San Diego Homeless Court Program, in conjunction with the San Diego County Public Defender's Office, has awarded DLA Piper with the Patricia Radburn Award in recognition of the outstanding pro bono services the firm has provided to the program. DLA Piper was recognized with the award, alongside six individuals who were also instrumental in growing the program over the past year, at a Homeless Court Providers' meeting on May 31, 2011 in San Diego. The Homeless Court Program is a special San Diego Superior Court session for homeless defendants, several of whom are veterans given the large military presence in San Diego, to resolve infractions, misdemeanor offenses and warrants. The goal of the program is to help resolve the problems that homelessness represents with practical solutions. The Patricia Radburn Award is named after former Public Defender Law Clerk Patricia Radburn and is granted to those who carry on her tradition of outstanding compassion, knowledge, assistance and understanding of clients. DLA Piper was singled out for its critical role in guiding the development of the Homeless Court Program, including providing training services and hosting and organizing monthly meetings. The firm’s long-standing support of the program also includes the contributions of volunteer attorneys from DLA Piper who counsel homeless defendants, prepare them for court hearings, and serve as a pro bono counsel during the hearings. DLA Piper’s San Diego office provides pro bono support to the Homeless Court Program through its Signature Project, Serving Those Who Serve Our Country. This project is dedicated to providing legal and community services to the veteran and active duty military population of San Diego County and further information is available here: http://www.dlapiperprobono.com/impact/signatureprojects/casedetail.aspx?case=435.
