The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights Launches A YouTube Contest To Highlight Young People's Engagement In Civil Rights


NEW YORK, NY- June 23rd, 2008 -

Today the National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights (NCRCR) launches a YouTube video contest - Civil Rights 2.0 - to draw thousands of young people into a viral dialogue on civil rights. This contest will expand the national conversation on civil rights to educate and invigorate more widespread youth involvement.

Youth political involvement and voter turnout this year has broken every stereotype about young people being apathetic. The Millennial Generation has shown that they are thinking about, and taking action on, politics and civil rights in new and creative ways. Civil Rights 2.0 will give these young people a platform to highlight their work, as well as what civil rights issues most concern them today.

Civil Rights 2.0 will be hosted on YouTube, and asks youth between the ages of 16 to 25 to make a 30 second to two minute video answering the question: What are you and your generation doing for civil rights today?

Entries will be judged by NCRCR staff and a panel of celebrity judges. Present judges include MTV News Correspondent, and former America's Next Top Model contestant, Kim Stolz, and award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson.

The contest winner will win a trip to New York City, a two night stay in the city, and media training. Three runner-ups will win video cameras. The top videos will be played at events and gatherings throughout the summer.

Created in response to recent federal court decisions that are eroding civil rights protections, the National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights is a collection of more than one hundred civil rights organizations and numerous individuals who came together to ensure that the courts protect and preserve justice, fairness, and opportunity for everyone. The Campaign focuses on public education and outreach, finding ways to get the message out about the impact of court rulings on our communities, our opportunities and our rights.
