The Project recruits, trains, mentors and supports attorneys who will provide pro bono representation to abused, neglected and abandoned (dependent) children identified by the Juvenile Court as requiring legal representation. The Project pro bono attorneys are enrolled in Broward Lawyer's Care of Legal Aid Service of Broward which provides them with $1,000,000 in malpractice coverage and allows for case management and tracking of pro bono hours. The Project is a collaborative effort of the Broward County Bar Association, Pro Bono Committee of the 17th Judicial Circuit, Legal Aid Service of Broward County and Florida's Children First. To date the Project has conducted two trainings, recruited more than 100 pro bono attorneys and is providing representation to more than 60 dependent children. The Project expects to expand its efforts, in cooperation with the Statewide and local Guardian ad Litem Program to provide representation to children who are disabled, victims of human trafficking or who are aging out of foster care and require a guardian of the person or a guardian advocate.
