Online Tool Helps Immigrants Protect Their Future

NEW YORK, NY (February 1, 2018) One year ago, the Immigration Advocates Network and Pro Bono Net launched immi, a free online tool to help immigrants know their rights, understand their legal options, and access civil legal aid to avoid risk of deportation.

In the past year, the site has had more than 100,000 visitors, 9,000 of whom have generated legal options for staying in the United States by using immi's online screening interview. Studies suggest that of the 11 million undocumented people in this country, 1.5 million may be eligible to pursue legal relief through such options as: family-based petitions, asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and others. Immi helps immigrants learn about these options and connect with reputable civil legal aid organizations to pursue legal relief.

"The current Administration is ending Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of people, and the future of DACA is uncertain," said Pat Malone, Associate Director of the Immigration Advocates Network. "Our goal is to help as many immigrants as possible get the information and legal assistance they need to protect themselves and their families."

"Now is the time to explore other options for immigration status. The screening interview is a safe, private way for people to learn more," said Eric Cohen, Executive Director of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). The ILRC helped develop the interview.

Immi was created by the Immigration Advocates Network and Pro Bono Net, nonprofit organizations dedicated to increasing access to justice for low-income immigrants and other vulnerable populations through innovative and effective technology. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center provided additional legal expertise and review.

Immi is available in Spanish and English. To learn more, visit https://www.immi.org.
