Description

Pro Bono Net is looking for a legal intern to provide support on our New York based programs and initiatives, with a specific focus on the NYC Pro Bono Center (http://www.probono.net/nycprobono), New York City's online hub for lawyers, law students and legal professionals engaged in pro bono work.  Our ideal intern will be excited by the opportunity to work with our broad network of civil legal and pro bono partners, and gain a valuable practical insight into program management and design in a public interest setting. Examples of specific tasks include:
  • Support in the day to day coordination of the NYC Pro Bono Center, a site co-hosted by Pro Bono Net, the Legal Aid Society and the City Bar Justice Center, by identifying and curating news, training and other materials of interest to the pro bono community in NYC; 
  • Review and co-ordinate updates to our online library resources, including assisting in the development a new permanent disaster relief section in the library & collecting materials related to Sandy relief efforts;
  •  Conducting research and developing new content and materials for the site, including social media materials, monthly e-newsletter content and participating in the planning for a new website design;
  • Interest in taking a leadership role in gathering stakeholder feedback to identify needs and new initiatives that focus on engaging law students and upstate community partners in access to justice goals;
  • Research on limited scope pro bono opportunities available in NY and coordinate updates to the Pro Bono Opportunities Guide, an online interactive guide of pro bono opportunities in NY, and a collaborative project of the City Bar Justice Center, the New York State Bar Association, Volunteers of Legal Service New York and Pro Bono Net; and
  • Project assistance and support with new pipeline projects that focus on building and mobilizing justice networks and expanding our reach and impact. 

Requirements & Qualifications

  • An interest in nonprofit work and/or access to justice issues
  • Detail oriented and highly organized, with ability to multitask, establish priorities and track projects
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Pro-active attitude and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Able to quickly learn new skills using software and above average proficiency with computers and technology.
  • Second or third year JD Students are encouraged to apply

Application Instructions

The internship is part-time, for 3-4 days a week, and for 8 to 10 weeks this summer.  The internship will be based out of Pro Bono Net's office in Midtown Manhattan, but occasional remote work is a possibility.  Whilst this is not a paid internship, a stipend will be offered to the successful candidate.
