The New Orleans Bar Association creates the Mark Moreau award to honor the SLLS co-director's career of service. Read the press release here:


New Orleans, La.— The NewOrleans BarAssociation and New Orleans Bar Foundation will honor Mark A. Moreau, executive director of Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, with the distinction of being the first recipient of an annual award givenin his name for his impressive career in public interest law.  The official presentation of the award will be at the association’s Annual Dinner Meeting on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Moreau recently retired as the executive director of Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, formerly known as New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation.

Moreau came to New Orleans in 1975 after receiving a J.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo and an L.L.M. in taxation from N.Y.U. School of Law. He began his career as a Volunteers in Service of America attorney for the New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation. Thereafter Moreau served in various capacities as an attorney, director of litigation and executive director of New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation and its successor, Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, until his retirement this year. 

During his career, Moreau served on many boards including The Pro Bono Project, which represents the interests of the underprivileged. His leadership, mentorship, and keen legal mind over the past three decades have inspired scores of law students, legal aid attorneys, and volunteer attorneys to dedicate their careers or their time to serving the public interest and embarking on careers in public interest law. Public recognitionof Mark’s work for the public interesthas been awarded by the Louisiana State Bar Association, Loyola Law School, the American Bar Association, and the Greater New Orleans Foundation among others.

The Mark Moreau Award celebrates a member of the New Orleans legal community whose career will be honored and remembered as inspiration for all members of the bar to serve the less fortunate and the public interest.

The New Orleans Bar Association represents the interests of lawyers practicing in the New Orleans metropolitan area.  The Association was founded in 1924 and has 3,100 members.
