FAIR HOUSING CENTER TO RELEASE RESULTS OF RACE DISCRIMINATION STUDY
Monday, April 23, 2007
- Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC)
On Tuesday, April 24, 2007, the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC) will release the results of an audit investigation into racially discriminatory practices within the metro area rental housing market. This is the first systemic study of housing discrimination conducted exclusively in the New Orleans area since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
GNOFHAC paired black and white testers who then applied to 40 rental properties in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany, and St. Bernard Parishes. GNOFHAC compared and contrasted tester experiences to determine whether or not discrimination occurred.
Audit results will be released at a news conference on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 10:30 a.m., 228 St. Charles Avenue, Room 1222. During the news conference, GNOFHAC staff will reveal the results of the study and discuss its implications.
GNOFHAC Executive Director James Perry comments that "Unfortunately, 39 years after passage of the federal Fair Housing Act, and given the array of difficult circumstances that New Orleans residents face while returning home, the results of this study suggest that housing discrimination based on race remains a serious barrier to equal housing opportunity and to our city's recovery."
