Presenter

Mallam J. Maynard was admitted to practice in North Carolina in 1983 after receiving his law degree from the University of North Carolina Law School. He is the Director of the Financial Protection Law Center which represents borrowers across North Carolina in connection with claims and defenses against predatory mortgage lenders, manufactured/mobile home construction defects, payday lenders, and other consumer protection litigation. Mr. Maynard has successfully represented thousands of victims of predatory lending in class actions and in individual cases. He has presented trainings in consumer law and foreclosure defense at seminars throughout the nation and at numerous Continuing Legal Education events. Mr. Maynard has testified at the invitation of legislative committees and the Federal Reserve Board. He has also testified as an expert witness in support of consumer protection litigation. Mr. Maynard is counsel for nonprofit housing corporations that provide subsidized housing to low-income seniors. He is the recipient of the Defender of Justice award from the North Carolina Justice Center for "outstanding impact litigation to improve the lives of low-income North Carolinians." Each year the National Consumer Law Center presents the Vern Countryman Consumer Law Award to a "legal services or other public interest attorney whose special contributions to the practice of consumer law have strengthened and affirmed the rights of low-income Americans". Mr. Maynard received the Vern Countryman Consumer Law Award presented in 2007 at the 16th Annual Consumer Rights Litigation Conference in Washington, D.C. In addition to litigation that has returned more than ten million dollars to North Carolina homeowners in predatory mortgage litigation, Mr. Maynard is co-counsel for payday loan victims in North Carolina litigation that settled for more than forty million dollars. His portion of the attorney fees in this litigation is paid to the non-profit public interest law firm with which he works in order to defend other North Carolina victims of predatory lending.
