Lori Skibbie, attorney for Estate & Elder Law Services with Volunteers of America, will go over the basic landscape of when a Power of Attorney is appropriate for clients or when setting up a guardianship or conservatorship may be a better option and how and where to refer clients needing further help.

Sean Burke, a Staff Attorney with Mid Minnesota Legal Aid, specializes in financial exploitation of seniors and vulnerable adults. Mr. Burke will cover some ways in which Powers of Authority or Guardianships have been used as instruments to commit fraud and some tools available to help principals who have been taken advantage of or defrauded.

The trainers will also discuss potential changes that have been proposed to the Power of Attorney, Guardianship and Conservatorship statutes intended to provide more protection for the principals.
