AmeriCorps Member-Honolulu (Full-Time)

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, a public interest non-profit law firm, seeks individuals committed to access to justice to serve as Full-Time AmeriCorps Member Advocates at our Legal Aid Honolulu Office.   As non-attorney advocates, members provide assistance to clients in Legal Aid offices, conduct outreach and education, teach legal clinics, assist clients with applications for services, and provide brief legal services under the supervision of an attorney.   Interested applicants must be available to begin Sept. 1, 2017, and commit to serving at least 1700 hours over one year period.

Qualifications: Some college education or degree preferred; strong oral communication skills; demonstrated desire to assist others; prior legal experience beneficial but not required - training provided; prior experience assisting indigent or disadvantaged populations is a plus.  Must have demonstrated a commitment to community service and/or volunteerism.

 

Benefits:
Up to $23,200 living stipend (if service completed over 12 full months) paid during term of service;
$5,815 education award (for qualified education expenses and student loans) available after service completed;
Student loan forbearance (on qualified loans);
Student loan interest repayment (on qualified loans);

AmeriCorps Member – Honolulu (Quarter–Time)

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, a public interest non-profit law firm, seeks individuals committed to access to justice to serve as Quarter-Time AmeriCorps Member Advocates.   The members assist unrepresented individuals at the courthouse based Self-Help (“Access to Justice”) Center and at the Legal Aid office.  Members learn about the court system while working alongside private and Legal Aid attorneys to serve the community.
Members commit to serving at least 450 hours over a one year period (approximately 8-10 hours per week) for a period of 1 year.    Must be available to begin Sept. 1, 2017 and must be available during Access to Justice Center hours - Monday and/or Wednesday, and/or Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Qualifications: Some college education or degree preferred; strong oral communication skills; demonstrated desire to assist others; prior legal experience beneficial but not required - training provided; prior experience assisting indigent or disadvantaged populations is a plus.  Must have demonstrated a commitment to community service and/or volunteerism.

 

Benefits:

Members commit to serving at least 450 hours over a one year period (approximately 8-10 hours per week) for a period of 1 year.    Must be available to begin Sept. 1, 2017, and must be available during Access to Justice Center hours – Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
