ACLU Capital Punishment Project

The newly expanded Capital Punishment Project of the American Civil Liberties Union invites applications for a State Strategies Coordinator to work in the Project's Durham, North Carolina office. The Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Director of the Capital Punishment Project.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Through a nationwide program of strategic litigation and public advocacy, the Project focuses on the unfairness and arbitrariness of capital punishment while working toward its ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The State Strategies Coordinator will be responsible for organizing the project's state-based activities. The specific responsibilities include:

·Working to identify and achieve feasible legislative reforms in the nation's death penalty jurisdictions, including but not limited to: reduction in the number of defendants who are death eligible, including a legislative exemption for the mentally ill; improvement in the fairness of capital trial procedures, including standards for the compensation and qualifications of defense counsel and increased funding of the defense function; expansion of state post conviction and clemency remedies; elimination of capital punishment's racial, economic and geographical discrimination; and implementation of reforms suggested by wrongful convictions.

·Working to identify states in which the prospect for achieving abolition or moratoriums is highest and supporting such efforts.

·Working with and providing participating ACLU affiliates and their coalition partners with regular, on-going technical assistance, information and advice.

·Sharing information across and among the ACLU's affiliates and national offices.

·Replicating successful strategies.

·Developing campaign materials to garner support for specific reform efforts and maintaining a clearinghouse of materials on both the public and internal web sites of the ACLU.

·Working with coalition partners to achieve these objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required; Law degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years experience in working with state legislative, referenda, and/or political campaigns is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, writing and communications skills, both written and verbal, are required.
  • A demonstrated interest in civil liberties and social justice is essential.
  • Excellent political and strategic judgment and strong interpersonal skills are required.
  • Experience with Internet research and strong computer skills with programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel throughout the country.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary commensurate with experience, within the parameters of the ACLU compensation scale. An excellent benefits package is provided.
