JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:
INVESTIGATOR/PARALEGAL
The Southern Center for Human Rights is accepting applications for the position of criminal justice investigator/paralegal.

The Southern Center for Human Rights is a public interest law office established in 1976 to protect the constitutional rights of prisoners and people facing the death penalty throughout the South. Attorneys with the Center represent people confined to prisons and jails in challenges to inhumane conditions and practices in prisons and jails, and people facing the death penalty at trials, on appeal and in post-conviction proceedings. The Center is also involved in public education and advocacy through Fairness for Prisoners' Families, an organization of families and friends of those who are in prison.

The Center is a vibrant office made up of 8 investigator/paralegals, 11 lawyers, an associate director, a public policy director, a coordinator of the prisoners' families program, an office manager, two administrative assistants, and a varying number of student interns and volunteers. For more information about the Center, see www.schr.org.

Responsibilities of an investigator include extensive travel, mostly in Alabama and Georgia, to prisons, jails and communities to conduct interviews of clients, witnesses and others, obtain documents, and other work to document conditions and practices in prisons and jails. Applicants should be committed to the Center's work, highly motivated, well organized, able to take initiative and work with a team, able to write clearly and concisely, willing to travel, and trustworthy with confidential information. A background in medicine, social work, or media may be helpful, but is not required. The Center seeks a commitment of at least three years. Salary: $31,000 with medical and dental benefits.

Please send a cover letter describing your interest in criminal justice work, along with a resume, writing sample and the names and telephone numbers of three references to: Shelby Smith, Associate Director, at the address above or by email to ssmith@schr.org (subject line: Job Opening). No phone calls. Deadline to apply is November 11. Applications from people of color are strongly encouraged.
