The National Consortium for Capital Defense Training is seeking applicants for the position of Training and Assistance Counsel. This is a fulltime 7-month consultant position from approximately September 2005 to the end of March 2006. The Consortium has submitted a funding proposal to the Bureau of Justice Assistance to design and implement pilot training programs to facilitate the improvement of death penalty representation to meet nationally recognized standards of competence. It has proposed conducting four (4) training programs (one presented on the national level and three state programs) in which capital defense teams are educated on substantive legal issues, investigation, and advocacy skills utilizing "bring your own case" methodologies. A "train the trainer" component will also be incorporated into these training programs and a national "train the trainer" program will also be conducted. The Training and Assistance Counsel ("TAC") will report to the Project Co-Directors and the Executive Committee. Responsibilities will include the following: coordinating outreach efforts to identify defense team members in underserved areas; working closely with Curriculum Design Committees to plan and design training events; recruitment of, and communication with, faculty for training events; supervising the evaluation process to measure the efficacy of "bring your own case" training; handling administrative and logistical matters; and working with co-directors to draft reports.
