Professor Anthony G. Amsterdam of New York University School of Law, in conjunction with The Habeas Assistance and Training Counsel (HAT) and the Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AO), are pleased to announce the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute. The Institute will be held at NYU Law School, 40 Washington Square South, New York, New York. The program will begin on Friday, June 10, 2011, at 1:00 p.m., and conclude on Sunday, June 12, 2011, at 1:00 p.m.

Preference will be given to Federal Defenders in Federal Defender Organizations with CHUs, and Assistant Federal Defenders and Research and Writing Specialists working in those CHUs. Given the nature of the program, attendance is limited to 48 participants. Please note that there are a limited number of complete or partial scholarships provided for by the Cornell Death Penalty Project for the program. Please register online as soon as possible to increase the likelihood that you obtain a spot. Registration confirmations will be sent out informing registrants whether they have been accepted or placed on a waiting list. Applicants will receive the confirmations via email. Individuals who apply for scholarships will be notified whether they have been granted a requested financial assistance award on a rolling basis and no later than May 1, 2011, along with instructions on how to make airline and hotel reservations.

The goal of this training initiative is to improve the quality of strategic planning and advocacy on behalf of death-sentenced inmates in the Supreme Court of the United States and in the process of obtaining or avoiding Supreme Court review. While all facets of Supreme Court practice will be addressed, the emphasis of the program will be on the pre-merits stages of Supreme Court litigation, including tactics and techniques for writing persuasive petitions for certiorari, opposing certiorari when the client won below, handling amici curiae, etc. The program will combine lectures with small-group case-planning sessions.
