On Friday, February 4, 2011, the Capital Habeas Unit of the Office of the Federal Public
Defender for the Northern District of Ohio, in association with their district’s chapter of the Federal
Bar Association, will be hosting its annual Ohio Capital Habeas Seminar. The event will start at 8:45
a.m. and end at approximately 5:00 p.m. The seminar will be held in the Auditorium on the 7th floor
of the Carl B. Stokes United States Court House located at 801 W. Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio.

The focus of this year’s seminar will be on how to litigate an ineffective assistance of
counsel issue in a habeas proceeding. There will be presentations on whether the issue is still
winnable in light of recent United States Supreme Court cases. There will also be presentations on
how to plead the claim and carry the issue through an evidentiary hearing . The presenters include
guests from the Habeas Assistance and Training group and other nationally recognized experts.
Lawrence Fox, a renowned expert on attorney ethics, will make a presentation on the ethical
implications for the capital trial attorney in a habeas proceeding.

The cost of the seminar is $55. The Capital Habeas Unit has applied for CLE credit and believes each attendee
will receive at least 5.5 hours of credit. They have also applied for Rule 20 certification (for Ohio
attorneys).

The seminar is restricted to those involved in the representation of criminal defendants.
Space in the auditorium is limited.

Interested individuals should contact Ms. Sason at (216) 522-4856 or christine_sason@fd.org regarding registration. The deadline for registration is January 31, 2011.
