CAPITAL HABEAS UNIT
LEGAL RESEARCH AND WRITING ATTORNEY

The Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Tennessee, Nashville, is accepting applications for the position of Legal Research and Writing Attorney in our capital habeas unit which represents indigent state prisoners in capital federal habeas corpus petitions brought pursuant to 28 U.S. C. 2254 and related proceedings.

Candidate must be a graduate of an ABA accredited law school and a member of the bar of at least one state and federal district court and have or obtain a Tennessee Bar license within a year of employment.

Candidates should possess the ability to discern and analyze legal issues from lengthy, complex records and the ability to articulate their thoughts in writing clearly, concisely, and quickly. Candidates should be proficient with computer assisted legal research as well as all other legal resource tools. Candidates should possess a demonstrated commitment to the representation of the indigent.

Salary will be determined by applicant's qualifications and experience consistent with federal guidelines and regulations. Employees of the Federal Public Defender are members of the judicial branch of government. They are considered at-will employees and are not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act. The position includes regular Government employment benefits including health, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Salary payable by mandatory electronic funds transfer (direct deposit). Selected candidate will be subject to a background check as a condition of employment.
