Texas Defender Service (TDS) is seeking a Development Director in its Austin, Texas office. Since 1995, TDS has been working to improve the quality of representation provided to those facing the death penalty in Texas. TDS directly represents death row inmates, consults in capital cases at all phases of the proceedings, participates in attorney training and conducts research and data collection projects regarding the application of the death penalty in Texas. In 2006, Texas Defender Service has represented inmates or consulted on more than 200 death penalty cases. TDS is a nonprofit organization with offices in Houston and Austin and supporters nationwide.

TDS has a successful track record of obtaining income from national foundations and to a lesser extent, individual and corporate donors. TDS'

budget has doubled over the last two years and currently is $1.2 million yearly. TDS seeks a Development Director who can build on the solid fundraising foundation currently in place and move the organization into a new phase of sustainability, influence and impact.

Experience and Attributes:

The Development Director will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the board of directors on fund development activities. Ideal candidates will bring to the position a variety of attributes, knowledge and

skills:

§ Proven track record of fundraising success with individual, corporate, and

foundation support

§ Excellent communicator, able to write and speak persuasively

§ Detail-oriented with experience tracking fundraising through one or more of

the major development software packages

§ Concern for social justice and interest in our mission.

§ Open-minded with integrity and a sense of humor.

§ Experience working with major donors is preferred.

§ Grant-writing experience is preferred.

§ Must have experience with one or more of the major development software

packages

Job Description:

The Director of Development will assist the Executive Director and the Board to implement fund raising strategies with the goal of raising necessary revenues at such levels as determined by the Board.

These responsibilities include, and are not necessarily limited to, the

following:

1. Develop a strategic long-term fundraising plan involving the Board, staff,

and volunteers;

2. Analyze and make recommendations to the Executive Director on revenue

producing strategies;

3. Research public, private and corporate foundations to determine which are

the most likely targets for Texas Defender Service proposals;

4. Oversee or actively participate in the writing and preparation of all grant

proposals;

5. Research and recommend strategies for special events and increasing

individual giving campaign;

6. Implement annual fund program;

7. Assist the Executive Director in all aspects of development including

hiring, supervising and training other development personnel, writing newsletters and appeal letters;

8. Create and implement strategy of community networking to raise public

awareness of Texas Defender Service;

9. Implement strategy for identifying donors, managing donor cultivation

strategies, and assisting the Executive Director in direct solicitations;

10. Organize and maintain efficient operational procedures and record-keeping

such as recording donations and receipting gifts in a timely manner;

11. Work collaboratively and as a team member with staff, volunteers, and many

other constituents and stakeholders to design and drive new philanthropic directions and priorities; 12. Recommend professional best practices to the Executive Director and Board.
