JOB TITLE: Staff Attorney

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Legal Teams

REPORTS TO: Supervising Attorney

SUMMARY: Assumes immediate caseload responsibility for providing consultation, training and assistance to attorneys appointed in capital appeals and habeas corpus proceedings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manages and monitors case progress of appointed counsel as evidenced by setting and meeting target dates.

  1. Completes reviews of draft pleadings, providing helpful feedback and editing to counsel, and completing other projects with counsel in a timely and competent manner.
  2. Demonstrates skill and diplomacy in assisting appointed counsel and developing their ability to provide high quality representation.
  3. Meets the billing expectations for attorneys in the office.

5. Utilizes and supervises investigators and law students to assure assignments are completed on a timely basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Admission to the California Bar.

2. Proven litigation skills with at least five years of law practice; substantial experience in capital trial, appellate and/or habeas corpus representation

3. Proficiency in legal analysis and writing.

4. Knowledge of Microsoft Office® and various legal databases.

5. Understanding of death penalty jurisprudence.

6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective relationships with attorneys and staff in person, by email and by telephone.

7. Demonstrated commitment to vigorous advocacy on behalf of indigent defendants.

8. Ability to perform the essential duties of the position in the face of time constraints and interruptions.

9. Willing to work more than 40 hours per week, which is frequently required, to perform the essential duties of the position.

1. CAP offers a modern office with heavy use of technology for research and communications.

2. Office is conveniently located near public transportation in downtown San Francisco

3. Case loads are heavy.

4. The work can be stressful
