EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ORLEANS INDIGENT INDIGENT DEFENDER PROGRAM New Orleans, Louisiana The Orleans Public Defenders Board (the "Board") seeks an Executive Director for the Orleans Public Defenders ("OPD") office. The Board is responsible for providing legal representation to indigent persons in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Board is committed to establishing a client-centered office that delivers quality legal representation, consistent with national standards for indigent defense and Sixth Amendment dictates. The Director would be responsible for implementing the Board's policy as the chief executive officer at the OPD, and would assist the Board in developing long-term policy goals. The Director's duties include: preparing and managing the OPD budget; directing the administrative and personnel functions, including hiring and managing the agency's lawyers and support staff; recruiting and managing volunteer lawyers; securing resources and developing policies and procedures to direct and enhance the legal practice of the agency; and working with court and other criminal justice agencies to advance the mission of the agency and improve the overall quality of the criminal defense bar. Qualified applicants should have a strong background in indigent defense representation or public interest law; a law degree from an accredited law school; a license to practice law in Louisiana (or eligibility for admission); substantial relevant legal experience in criminal defense delivery systems; substantial management and/or supervisory experience, particularly in a large urban setting; excellent writing and oral communication skills; and a demonstrated commitment to the right to counsel. These factors will be used to distinguish the best-qualified candidates for the position. Please discuss and explain, in detail, your experience in the following Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSAs) areas: 1. Management and/or supervision of lawyers and legal teams; 2. Criminal defense experience generally, and knowledge of the New Orleans, Louisiana criminal justice system specifically; 3. Demonstrated ability to manage a budget process, and any relevant governmental or quasi-governmental funding experience; 4. Commitment to delivering high-quality, zealous legal representation to indigent people facing a loss of liberty, including knowledge of national standards for the provision of indigent defense in urban populations. Salary shall be commensurate with experience up to the level paid for positions with similar responsibilities at the District Attorney's office in New Orleans, Louisiana.
