The National Capital Area Paralegal Association (NCAPA) is pleased to announce that the following members met or exceeded the 24-hour pro bono standard set by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA). These paralegals have performed legal volunteer work to assist the DC metro area's poor and otherwise-disadvantaged to obtain equal access to the legal justice system. While the majority of volunteer work performed by NCAPA paralegals was comprised of interviewing prospective clients; investigation, legal research, cite checking and other responsibilities normally performed by an attorney were done by these paralegals; all under the proper supervision of one or more attorneys. Sue Lyon***; Eric Moe; Russ Reiff***; Michael Roberts*; Jan Sion; Carmen Todd; and Robyn Vai. * - Performed more than 100 pro bono clinical hours ** - Performed more than 200 pro bono clinical hours *** - Performed more than 500 pro bono clinical hours Of the over-2,000 hours volunteered by NCAPA's paralegals in 2003, the following is a listing of principal organizations in which these paralegals performed pro bono work: Disabled American Veterans (650 hours); Bread for the City; Washington, DC (400 hours); Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington-Legal Clinic; Washington, DC (290 hours); Employment Justice Center/Workers' Rights Clinic; Washington, DC (200 hours); Uncontested Divorce Clinics; Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, City of Alexandria, VA (150 hours); other local pro bono projects (330 hours). Clinical pro bono hours include only those hours volunteered to assist DC's poor - no other administrative hours are included in these counts. NCAPA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that was formed in 1974 to promote and protect professional interests of paralegals in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. It has almost 500 members throughout DC, Suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia. NCAPA provides a forum for the exchange of viewpoints on matters of professional interest, fairly represents both public and private paralegal interests, and fosters education by serving as a resource center for career and educational opportunities.
