D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center Public Benefits Training Series: TANF Session - Cash Assistance for Families in Need

  • Public Benefits

Join advocates and lawyers to learn about two significant benefits available to some District residents: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as Food Stamps). The District’s FY 2018 budget made significant reforms to the TANF time limit and sanction policies that were implemented in April 2018.  Families who have exceeded 60 months of TANF cash assistance are no longer at risk of losing their benefits due to time limits. Additionally, their monthly benefit amount increased significantly as of April 2018.  Benefits will also increase in October 2018. These changes represent a positive step towards protecting D.C.’s social safety net, and therefore it will be very important for advocates to learn about these expected changes so that they can effectively counsel TANF families.  Come hear Curt Campbell and Carolyn Rumer (both of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia) discuss these important changes. Although the program will focus on TANF, SNAP program rules will also be briefly discussed.  In addition, Kate Coventry (D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute) and Damon King (Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia) will also share important policy and advocacy strategies.
