The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless brings legal services to the community, seeking to overcome barriers existing between our neighbors living in poverty and the ability to access legal representation. We are able to do this work due to the generosity of a network of over 250 volunteer attorneys and legal assistants. The Legal Clinic welcomes attorneys and attorney-paralegal teams interested in increasing access to justice for our neighbors, while learning more about shelter, housing, and public benefits law.
Volunteers staff one-hour intake sessions at one of the Legal Clinics six intake sites - at meal programs, health clinics, and day programs throughout the District.
Volunteers see an average of 3-5 clients at each intake, and act as primary legal representative for clients who present legal issues that meet WLCH case selection guidelines.
Legal Clinic staff attorneys provide advice and guidance on all volunteer cases.
Volunteers must:
Attend the New Volunteer Training.
Be a current member of the D.C. Bar, or have begun the process for waiving in admission.
If employed by the Federal Government, be a member in good standing in the highest court of any state.
If a paralegal, volunteer only in partnership with and under the direct supervision of an attorney authorized to practice in D.C.
