Social Security Disability Benefits: Understanding the Initial Application Process

Topics:
  • Public Benefits

The East of the River Casehandlers invite you to a free, half-day workshop in Ward 8 (Anacostia) on the application process for the Social Security Administration's (SSA) disability programs: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Our experienced trainers from Whitman-Walker Health Legal Services will cover the nuts and bolts of the SSI and SSDI programs, including eligibility requirements, the different benefits the two programs provide, the SSA's disability evaluation process, the general standards required for medical approval, and some helpful tips to complete a successful application. Workshop participants will also learn more
about the legal aid resources available to low-income SSI/SSDI applicants in Ward 8.

This training is ideal for case managers, attorneys and representatives who assist clients in applying for disability benefits (especially those who are new to the SSI/SSDI application process) and pro bono attorneys interested in representing applicants who have been denied benefits and need to learn more about the program standards.

This event is free but pre-registration is required because space is limited. To register for this program, contact Heather Hodges at hhodges@nlsp.org or 202.269.5119.
