Our apologies! This event has filled to capacity. Please select a different pro bono week event.

As DC housing costs continue to soar, affordable housing is becoming increasingly out of reach for many. And the dwindling supply of affordable housing is one of the most significant access-to-justice issues facing low-income individuals and families.

The Pro Bono Week tour of D.C. Superior Court's Landlord and Tenant Branch will explore housing and access to justice from the perspective of tenants and their advocates. This is a fantastic opportunity to get an inside perspective on what goes on in this fast-paced, high-volume court.

Your guide, Beth Mellen Harrison, is the Director of Legal Aid's Landlord-Tenant Court-Based Legal Services Project and has been practicing housing law in the District for over a decade. Beth will describe court operations and discuss the presence (or lack thereof) of lawyers representing tenants and landlords, barriers to broader access to counsel, and challenges in the court system for low-income tenants.

In addition, we'll observe Roll Call, the court's daily calendar call of initial hearings. And you'll learn more about how pro bono lawyers can help low-income tenants assert their rights and stay in their homes.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. We welcome members of the D.C. Bar, those otherwise eligible to practice in the D.C. Courts, and law students; those currently eligible to practice will get priority.
