Defending a client faced with the loss of freedom is among the most rewarding and challenging experiences that you will experience as an attorney. The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program with Williams & Connolly LLP and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia invite you to use your legal talents to defend men and women facing incarceration in hearings before the United States Parole Commission.
This training will prepare you to provide quality representation to clients in parole hearings. The program will explain the procedures of the Parole Commission and provide useful training on working with indigent clients and defending criminal charges.
The Parole Advocacy Workshop will include:
- An Overview of the Parole Division Training Program
- History of Parole in D.C.
- Procedural Overview of the Parole Process
- Fundamentals of Cross-Examination
- A Mock Parole Hearing
- U.S. Parole Commission Sentencing Guidelines
- Defending Law Violations
Training participants are strongly encouraged to represent 2 clients at parole hearings with the assistance of experienced attorneys from the Public Defender Service. No particular expertise is required to participate. Attorneys must be admitted to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Malpractice insurance is NOT provided by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program or the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. This training session is NOT MCLE accredited.
