More than half of the litigants who appear before the Family Division at D.C. Superior Court are pro se. Many of these individuals have relatively simple legal cases and can represent themselves with a little assistance. In January 1994, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program launched the Pro-Se-Plus Divorce Clinic to help unrepresented litigants better understands the divorce process in D.C. The Clinic was recognized in 1995 by the ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services as an innovative program that meets the needs of our community. The Clinic has also served as a role model for other jurisdictions. If you are an attorney, paralegal, or law student, you can help the many individuals who appear pro se at the courthouse by attending this training and volunteering in the Clinic. The training will cover substantive and procedural divorce law. You will learn about how the Clinic is conducted and we will provide you with a volunteer training manual about divorce law that includes an outline of the presentations given by volunteers at the Clinic and the court's form pro se divorce pleadings. No experience in family law is required; all volunteers must attend this training before participating in the Clinic. Participants must agree to staff two Clinic workshops. This is appropriate for attorneys, paralegals and law students.
