LawHelp Interactive Mobile-First Redesign

Legal Aid Society of Hawaii (“LASH”) in partnership with Pro Bono Net ("PBN"), received a grant award from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) Technology Initiative Grant (TIG) program to undertake a Mobile Usability Initiative focused on identifying and supporting the best approaches for mobile usability of LawHelp Interactive ("LHI") interviews. 

LASH formed a mobile advisory committee in 2016 comprised of national LHI partners to support this mobile usability work. One of the committee's key recommendations was to engage in a mobile-first redesign that supports the growing number of users (about 1 in 4) accessing LHI through their mobile and tablet devices while also ensuring the application will continue to work well at self-help centers and other environments where users access LHI from desktops.

The development of the mobile-first redesigns was completed by,  a full-service marketing and communications firm focused on serving nonprofits, under the guidance of PBN, LASH, and the mobile advisory board. also conducted a device-independent usability review of LHI, which informed many of the redesign decisions.This LHI usability review was covered under an LSC TIG 14024 to Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA); implementation of the redesign will also be covered by an OSLSA TIG.

Redesign Timeline

The following is a basic timeline of the redesign project: 

  • General LHI usability review: completed October 2017
  • LHI redesigns: completed June 2017
  • Redesign implementation/technical development: completed Nov 10, 2017
  • Internal & Advisory Committee testing: ongoing
  • Partner/Community Testing: November 13- December 15, 2017
  • Production Deployment: December 21, 2017

Community Testing

The official community testing period is now closed but we still welcome feedback on the new look and feel of LHI. You can preview and test the redesign in our testing environment through December 21, 2017. The redesign will be implemented into the production environment on the evening of December 21, 2017.
