Members of the ____________ Bar Association will give new meaning to public service when they cook and serve a dinner for the homeless at the Jane Addams Shelter on Thursday, October 29, 2009.

Following the meal, the lawyers will offer a legal clinic to shelter residents, answering questions they may have about Social Security or veterans benefits, family law, disability and other legal concerns.

The dinner and clinic are part of the first National Pro Bono Week Celebration that focuses attention on the legal work lawyers do in their communities to improve the lives of their friends and neighbors. According to a study released in February 2009, nearly three quarters of lawyers in the United States report doing pro bono work. "We believe the American Bar Association recommendation that each lawyer performs a minimum of 50 hours of pro bono service each year allows the legal community to support the greater community," says Mark Schickman, chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service.
