Under North Carolina law, a person who misses traffic court or is unable to pay traffic court fines and fees is subject to an indefinite suspension of his or her driver's license, regardless of whether it is the person's first ticket or first time missing court.
These suspensions have dire consequences for drivers and their families, particularly for North Carolinians who are already economically vulnerable and those who live in rural areas without reliable public transportation.
The NC Pro Bono Resource Center (PBRC), a program of the Equal Access to Justice Commission, teaches NC drivers, without access to an attorney, how to restore their driver's licenses with individually tailored advice letters.

Law student volunteers will conduct survey calls to clients who have received an advice letter. Volunteers will determine whether the client has restored their license and determine what legal and economic barriers exist and in what area the client could use extra assistance from an attorney.

PBRC attorneys will train volunteers and volunteers will work remotely to complete the survey.
