The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project. Capital Area Bar Association, and partners have scheduled a free expungement legal clinic on October 29, 2021 in Jackson, MS to assist low-income or limited means Mississippians in beginning the process to clear their records of eligible crimes.
Volunteer lawyers will be available to assist self-represented litigants in drafting necessary court documents for expungement legal proceedings. Volunteer attorneys will explain the proceedings, provide general information, and answer questions. The attorneys are not obligated to accompany clinic participants to court and file documents for them. The expectation is that individuals will be able to represent themselves in court.
Those who wish to participate in the expungement legal clinic cannot have annual incomes that exceed 200% of federal poverty guidelines. For a household of two, that would be $31,860. For a household of three, that would be $40,180. For a household of four, that would be $48,500. Individuals cannot make more than $31,860 annually.
Walk-ins will be accepted on the day of the clinic, however, clinic appointments are strongly encouraged to make sure attendees bring all necessary documents to the clinic. Clinic applications and more information on mandatory documents to bring can be found online at www.mvlp.org/clinics .
