The criminal legal system disproportionately impacts people of color, and having a criminal record creates significant barriers especially with employment, housing, and family reunification. Expungement helps alleviate barriers to successful reentry particularly necessary during the financial crisis due to the health pandemic. This practical skills training will focus on criminal record expungement in New Jersey including recent amendments to the expungement statute implemented this year. This training is designed to prepare volunteer attorneys to advise low-income individuals with criminal records in a remote clinical setting and help them e-file pro se petitions through e-courts for expungement. Non-attorneys are welcome to attend.

Speakers:
- Karen Robinson, Esq., Managing Attorney, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice
- Sarah Hatcher, Essex County Ombudsman, New Jersey Courts

*NOTE: CLE fees are waived for non-attorneys and attorneys who agree to represent one VLJ pro bono client (one per course you attend) in the area of law covered by the training, within the proceeding year. Indicate your volunteer interest upon registration and no payment is required.
