This CLE will provide an overview of immigration detention generally, and discuss the disturbing realities surrounding immigration detention in Minnesota. Presenters will discuss the legal basis for ICE detention, the general framework of the immigration detention system in Minnesota, issues and trends specific to asylum-seekers and trafficking victims in Minnesota, emergency preparation and pro se help with collateral matters for immigrants at risk of detention, the realities and trauma experienced by immigrants in detention, and issues that immigrants face post-detention. Presenters will also provide information about how attorneys, paralegals, and others can volunteer to help immigrants and refugees in Minnesota who are facing detention or have other immigration-related needs.
