Every year thousands of Minnesota residents receive notice that they are being evicted from their homes. These residents are often low income, struggling to put food on the table for themselves or their children, buried under debt and dealing with medical issues. Some have withheld rent because their apartments are dilapidated and need repair, some made the choice to buy food rather than pay rent, and some are simply receiving a UD or eviction on the door because the Landlord wants the person out of the building.

This training will provide attorneys and paralegals with the tools they need to take a Pro Bono Expungement case from start to finish. Interested volunteers will learn how to investigate an eviction, evaluate whether the client is ready for expungement, draft an expungement motion, and represent the client before the court. We invite you to come and learn how the eviction process works in Hennepin County and beyond.

Trained volunteers can, under supervision, sign up to attend one of our monthly Expungement workshops where they work one on one with a family in need- drafting the expungement motion, preparing a 3-5 minute argument, and practice representing the family in an upcoming motion hearing. Anyone coming to the training can be guaranteed a client case within 2-4 weeks!
