This year’s National Pro Bono Week theme is domestic violence, and October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
At Legal Aid, we regularly are looking for pro bono counsel to represent domestic violence survivors in child custody cases to help them achieve long-term safety and stability for themselves and their children. For parents who cannot afford a lawyer, navigating the court system on their own is difficult enough; and, for survivors of domestic violence who share children with their former partners who were abusive, having to face their former partners in court can be daunting at best.
Bring your “brown bag” lunch and come learn from Legal Aid’s domestic violence and family law experts. Discussion topics will include:
Child custody law basics
What is involved in handling a “typical” child custody case
How the dynamics of domestic violence impact child custody cases
Next steps to get involved
