In honor of the ABA’s theme for the 2018 Celebrate Pro Bono week, Disaster Resiliency, this program will provide a practical guide for tax attorneys interested in providing pro bono assistance to natural disaster survivors. The panelists will first discuss the key tax issues faced by taxpayers in the aftermath of a disaster and how to guide them through the recovery process. Given that tax problems often do not vest until years after a disaster, the panelists will also discuss how tax attorneys can provide immediate assistance to disaster survivors by appealing FEMA denials. This area of law is strikingly similar to resolving certain IRS controversies, such as submitting an IRS Appeal or Audit Reconsideration. This free webinar will prepare tax attorneys to use their analytical skills to respond to a disaster quickly and provide ongoing support.
