Description
This program will include a discussion of what is elder abuse, generally, its prevalence, risk factors, red flags, perpetrators and relevant statutes, as well as an in-depth discussion of intimate partner violence in later life and financial exploitation of older adults. Additionally, the program will explore the different transaction-specific legal standards of capacity, including the interplay between diminished capacity, undue influence and meaningful consent. The evening will conclude with a Q&A with the Hon. Lisa S. Ottley about guardianship matters, with an emphasis on some of the predominant legal issues that arise in these matters, the particular demands of guardianship cases and best practices.

Session 1: Introduction to Elder Abuse, 1 credit

Session 2: Legal Capacity – Not a Yes/No Inquiry, 1 credit

Session 3: Q and A with a Guardianship Judge, .5 credit
