How Lawyers Can Fight Homelessness

Expert discussion on causes of and solutions to homelessness and the unique ways that only legal aid agencies and pro bono attorney volunteers can help combat homelessness. The program will emphasize the various things lawyers can do to protect against unjust evictions, preserve existing housing, remedy unsafe housing conditions, ensure receipt of public benefits and health care, work with local governments –all being ways to engage pro bono volunteer attorneys with organizations serving those facing homelessness in preventing and fighting against homelessness.
Class covers:
Representing tenants in fighting unjust evictions and remediating unsafe housing conditions
Understanding and assisting tenants with housing subsidies and available, protective programming
Securing available public benefits to help prevent homelessness
Ways law firms can influence helpful public policy discussions
Working with existing, and newly enacted, legal frameworks to address homelessness issues
Long-term solutions for ending homelessness
