Pro Bono Week CLE: The Criminalization of Poverty

Topics:
  • Continuing Legal Education Program (CLE)
  • Training (non-CLE)

As court systems and municipalities throughout the country have increased fines and penalties for low level criminal offenses, low income people often find themselves suffering consequences far beyond the criminal justice system. The legacy of criminal records and unpaid fines can impact, for example, a person's ability to secure housing or obtain a job. In addition, these collateral consequences disproportionately impact communities of color and affect the well-being of children, relatives and community members. Please join us for a discussion about the high price of being poor and ways pro bono lawyers can help low income clients find their way out of the criminalization trap. The program will feature a keynote by Nusrat Choudhury, staff attorney with the ACLU Racial Justice Project in New York, and a panel of local attorneys, experts and clients. Attendees will also be able to sign up for upcoming pro bono training and service opportunities with local legal services organizations.
