We have seen a new wave of anti-immigrant hate speech reflected in the national political discourse and captured in the mainstream media. Recently, across the country there has been increased visibility in the media of criminal cases involving immigrants. Anti-immigrant officials have brought attention to these high profile criminal cases, condemning the existence of so-called “sanctuary” cities. As a result, some politicians have used this as an opportunity to push their nativist agenda by leading attacks at both the federal and local levels against pro-immigrant policies that rightfully separate immigration enforcement from local law enforcement. This webinar will share national public opinion research conducted in late 2015 to help the immigrant rights movement defend existing local policies, advance new local policies, and respond effectively when high profile cases involving immigrants arise in the media. We will share strategic messages on how to address the concerns of a variety of local stakeholders and hear from both communications staff and organizers on how these messages have been implemented on the ground, in places as diverse as California and Texas. Together, we can continue to defend and advance policies to keep Iocal law enforcement out of the harmful business of deportations.
