Every year, HandsOn Greater Richmond organizes a day of service in the Greater Richmond area, during which approximately 1,000 volunteers are engaged in a variety of projects, all to help our local nonprofits. This year, the Carrico Center will be participating in HandsOn Day, October 17th, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, at a special project entitled, "The Chief Justice's Garden." Specifically, we will be supporting the work of Preservation Virginia and the upkeep of the John Marshall House, located in Richmond's historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Preservation Virginia is dedicated to perpetuating and revitalizing Virginia's cultural, architectural and historic heritage thereby ensuring that historic places are integral parts of the lives of present and future generations. John Marshall is best known as the "Great Chief Justice" for his role in creating the modern Supreme Court. He lived in this residence for 45 years. The John Marshall House has been a museum since 1913 and contains the largest collection of furnishings and memorabilia associated with the Marshall's family and career. Volunteers will pull violets and weeds, plant perennials, paint garden benches and spruce up the garden and historic site. The historic site will benefit from this refreshing and the visitors will see a more accurate view of how the Chief Justice's garden and site may have looked.
