Helping Military Veterans Expunge Eviction Records: Free Brown Bag Lunch Training

Topics:
  • Military/Veterans
  • Continuing Legal Education Program (CLE)
  • Expungement
  • Pro Bono Program/Legal Services Organization

Trainers:

Christopher M. Hanrahan, Resource Attorney, Volunteer Lawyers Network

Dana May Christensen, Veteran Legal Advocate, Veteran Justice Corps,
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid

Training Summary:

One component of preventing homelessness among veterans is erasing evictions or unlawful detainers from their records. Having a "UD" on one's record creates significant barriers to being able to rent from landlords. However, many tenants have a chance at expunging UD cases, but would be unsuccessful in achieving this goal without the benefit of a pro bono attorney. In an effort to fight veteran homelessness, the Veteran Justice Corps and Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid will be sponsoring a housing expungement training for attorneys interested in helping clients with military service backgrounds. MMLA and VLN will direct cases involving veterans seeking expungements to attorneys who go through the training throughout the year. These potential clients will have a range of discharge statuses, including less-than-honorable, and will be seeking advice and representation in their expungement motions in order to obtain stable housing.
