A Resident physician in the UA Department of Family and Community Medicine strongly believed that people should learn about their right to designate someone to make future health care decisions for them when they become unable to do so and to specify the types of care they would want to receive. He asked the Tucson Family Advocacy Program (TFAP) to help provide education on Advance Directives in the community in addition to assisting referred patients at the Family Medicine Clinic.

In partnership with the Student Health Law Association of the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law, TFAP developed and conducts Advance Directive clinics for elderly and disabled residents of public housing facilities and at the Armory Park Senior Center. At these clinics, a lawyer and a Resident Family Medicine Physician explain the importance of advance directives from the legal and medical perspectives. Then students from the College of Law, under the supervision of TFAP staff and volunteer attorneys, help participants understand and complete medical powers of attorney and living wills.

The next Advance Directive Clinic will be help at Armory Park Senior Center on Wednesday October 17th at 10:00am. For more information please contact Tucson Family Advocacy Program at 520.694.1624.
